The Gist

The entire world is run by a single file. Multiple people, after locating this file and realizing what it is, managed to get themselves into trouble. They had all individually come to the decision to escape to medieval England where they pretend to be wizards. These wizards have decided that anytime you make a macro to modify the file, you have to contribute it back to a central location.

The Good

  • In a quirky way shows some of the basics of FOSS.
  • It takes two separate but still nerdy ideas and combines them into one book.

The Bad

  • It is a super corny story.
  • Most of the "twists" in the ending were all very telegraphed.

The Questions

  • What sort of a background does a person have where they would decide mixing these two, sometimes at war, nerdy ideas together.

Review

This book is an extremely corny story following the story of a man who finds the file that runs the world. Very early on it shows some of the basics of FOSS development and throughout shows some of the principles of it in practice. While it wasn't the best writing I've ever read it had enough moments that really clicked with me and made me fall in love with it.
